About the role



He/she will be in charge of ensuring the Company operates within the legal framework of the country it operates in while managing the insurance portfolio within the set out legislative provisions while striving to minimize the Company’s exposure to unforeseeable business risks.

 

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities



  1. Ensuring the Company is adequately defended especially when we are served with Court Summons or Memorandum of Claims.
  2. Ensuring the Company is adequately insured in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, where we have the existing branches, for purposes of covering our risks.
  3. Ensuring the medical insurance provider’s adequately service our account.
  4. Obtaining claim supporting documents from various departments especially for non- motor claims.
  5. Ensuring that all insurance claims lodged are settled accordingly.
  6. Advise the Human Resources Department on how to manage various personnel issues that have a legal inclination.
  7. Attending court hearings and mentions for civil cases involving the Company.
  8. Draft commitment or undertaking letters and agreements for purposes of arranging on payment modules for clients with outstanding debts.
  9. Preparing and proof-reading contracts between the Company and various client’s as per the specifications provided.
  10. Liaising with insurance Assessors and Adjusters to ensure that our claims are adequately
    adjusted.
  11. Processing, follow-up and recovering of third party property claims.
  12. Updating and managing of the claim’s register.
  13. Managing of the more than 900 staff medical insurance portfolio.
  14. Responding to the telephone and email enquiries.
  15. Completion of various Claim Forms.
  16. Ensure that claims are properly intimated within the shortest of time.
  17. Audit and analyze claim supporting documents before they are sent out to Insurer’s, Insurance Adjuster’s, Assessors and Investigator’s.
  18. Attend fortnightly meetings with our Insurer’s for purposes of obtaining status reports for the claims submitted to them.
  19. Meeting with our Advocates to come up with ways and strategies to ensure that the Company’s interest especially for work injury, traffic and labour related matters are well handled to insulate the Company adequately.
  20. Manage, evaluate, train and provide professional guidance to my team.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor of Law, Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Diploma in Criminology, Penology and Social Order.
  2. 3 year’s experience in banking, investment and customer relations,
  3. 7 year’s experience- Senior Legal and Insurance Officer in an insurance company
  4. Understanding of the Laws of Kenya for purposes of safeguarding the Company’s interest whilst operating within the precincts of the law.
  5. Understanding of the insurance products and business.

 

Functional Skills



 

  1. Ensure personnel and Company assets are adequately insured.
  2. Preparing of contracts for the Company and incoming clients while capturing terms that are favourable for the Company.
  3. Ensure adequacy of insurance cover by assessing valuation reports and foreseeable risks.

Business Understanding

 



  1. Understanding of the Laws of Kenya for purposes of safeguarding the Company’s interest whilst operating within the precincts of the law.
  2. Understanding of the insurance products and business.

 

Generic Skills



  1. Proficient with MS Office- Word and excel tools
  2. Proficient in  Company, Insurance, Traffic, Contract Laws etc
  3. Data analysis for purposes of processing claims
  4. Ensuring claims are reported in time, documented and intimated to the insurer by supervising the process.
  5. Reviewing and analyzing the claim supporting documents whilst verifying their accuracy before submission to the insurers.
